orphaned echoes, reclaim the land

DIPLOMA 13 - ISLANDING

this year i focused on an abandoned orphanage to uncover the ways in which governmental policies create layers of marginalisation through ethnic homogenisation and socio-economic exclusion. the project challenges traditional restoration practices by proposing a communal dismantling practice to expose oppressive structures; transforming the site into a space of reflection and collective memory, and offering a new approach to repairing historical sites of injustice. the project is written as a poem to capture the emotional essence of this transformation, amplifying marginalised voices.

keeping up with the tÜrkkan’s

DIPLOMA 13 - EXPERIMENTS IN REPARATION

this year i focused on ways to deploy my skills as an architect to repair, restore, regenerate, reclaim and transform world systems that have isolated the female gender into the private sphere. but even so created even more divisions within the domestic sphere itself. i focused on my nuclear family in order to uncover ways in which each member performed their gendered identities. this led me to wonder how this would be translated on a wider scale and that is where the model of my grandmother’s home became a tool of interrogation to uncover and facilitate conversations around gendered identities of women in Turkey.

in collaboration with Awashan ltd. the Dijonss store was turned into an event space for the doncare x jyosei pop-up event. the layout was meticulously curated, with display cases designed to seamlessly integrate the showcased clothing into the event's broader visual narrative. emphasizing both aesthetic appeal and customer engagement, the project explored the intersections of fashion and interactive design. additionally, a custom-made bouncy castle was conceptualised, aligning with the event’s playful and immersive atmosphere, adding a dynamic layer to the overall experience.

21st century caravanserai - transformation of an old vernacular

EXPERIMENTAL 14 - DODICI PERSONAGGI IN CERCA D’AUTORE

the unit saw architectural identity as fluid and hence defining it as a state that is constantly in flux, promoting a sustainable mode of building that is very much shaped by existing ecologies. the project takes a critical regionalist approach where the caravanserai typology will be revived through the usage of the same local material; tuff , to suit the needs of present-day and that of a speculated automate future. the caravanserai is found in capadoccia at the intersection of the silk road and now a modern day highway. the volcanic tuff in the region is experimented with to find optimal conditions for weathering.

at Asif Khan, i actively contributed to the design and development process by creating detailed models that were used in client meetings. my work extended into iterating exhibition spaces for the Museum of London, allowing me to explore various design possibilities. through these experiences, i gained a comprehensive understanding of how spatial design can shape and influence interactions, both physically and psychologically. the hands-on approach in modelling and visualising these spaces sharpened my ability to translate complex design ideas into tangible forms, ensuring they aligned with the project's goals and the client's vision.

vertical de-densification-intersecting typologies

EXPERIMENTAL 8 - POLITICS OF THE BARTER BLOCK

this year i researched two different areas of havana, vieja (old city centre) where courtyard houses were the prominent typology and reinterpreted this in vedado; a later development where feelings of community had subsided. i explored ideas of density, interconnectedness, openness, and free flow of circulation throughout the year. this design aims to reconnect people by dissolving physical borders and balancing living density and construction density.
